Social Media vs. Soul Care: Finding God’s Voice in a Noisy World
Let’s be real for a second: when’s the last time you spent more time in prayer than on your phone?
If you’re wincing right now, you’re not alone. I checked my screen time last week and nearly threw my phone across the room. Six hours. Six hours of scrolling, liking, and getting lost in other people’s highlight reels.
Meanwhile, my Bible sat unopened on my nightstand, probably wondering if it had been replaced by a glowing rectangle.
The Loudest Voice Wins
Here’s the thing about social media—it’s designed to be addictive. Every notification, every scroll, every “quick check” is engineered to grab your attention and keep it. And it’s really, really good at its job.
But God? He speaks in whispers. He waits patiently. He doesn’t send push notifications or algorithm-driven content to compete for your attention.
Guess who usually wins that battle?
The Comparison Trap
Social media doesn’t just steal our time—it steals our peace. We scroll through everyone’s perfect moments and suddenly our ordinary Tuesday feels like failure. Their relationship looks flawless, their faith seems stronger, their life appears more blessed.
Meanwhile, God is trying to remind you that He has specific plans for your life, not the curated version of someone else’s.
Creating Sacred Space in a Digital World
Start Your Day Differently: Before you reach for your phone, reach for God. Even five minutes of prayer or reading one verse can set a completely different tone for your day.
Curate Your Feed: Unfollow accounts that make you feel “less than” and follow ones that point you toward truth. Your algorithm should serve your soul, not steal from it.
Practice Digital Sabbath: Pick one hour (or day) each week to go completely offline. Watch how much clearer you can hear God’s voice when the digital noise stops.
Turn Off Notifications: Not everything needs immediate attention. Create space for God to interrupt your day instead of letting apps do it.
The FOMO vs. JOMO Shift
Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) keeps us scrolling endlessly, afraid we’ll miss something important. But what if we embraced Joy of Missing Out (JOMO) instead?
What if missing that drama in the group chat meant you caught God’s peace instead? What if skipping that Instagram story meant you noticed the sunset He painted just for you?
God’s Algorithm is Different
Social media shows you what it thinks you want to see. God shows you what you need to see. Social media feeds your insecurities. God feeds your soul. Social media creates urgency about things that don’t matter. God creates clarity about things that do.
The 10-Minute Challenge
Here’s something that changed everything for me: for every 10 minutes I spend on social media, I spend at least 1 minute with God. Sounds easy, right? Try it for a week.
You’ll either dramatically reduce your screen time or dramatically increase your God time. Either way, you win.
It’s Not All or Nothing
This isn’t about becoming a digital hermit or throwing your phone in a drawer. Technology isn’t evil—it’s just loud. The goal isn’t to eliminate it but to create intentional space where God’s voice can break through the noise.
A Prayer for the Scrolling Soul
God, help me remember that my worth isn’t measured in likes, my purpose isn’t found in posts, and my peace doesn’t come from pixels. Teach me to seek Your voice first and to find my identity in Your love, not in the approval of strangers online. Show me how to use technology as a tool, not a master. Amen.
The Bottom Line
Your soul needs tending more than your feed needs checking. God’s voice is always available, but you have to tune out the noise to tune in to Him.
What would change in your life if you heard God’s voice as clearly as you hear your notification sounds?
What’s one small change you could make this week to create more space for God’s voice in your daily routine?
